Rich is the Chief Scientist for Information Management Technologies within the Intelligent Systems Division at NASA Ames Research Center. He manages NASA R&D projects in the areas of intelligent information management, collaborative systems, and semantic technologies. He has led the development of decision support and knowledge management systems for a wide range of NASA personnel, including astrobiologists, space and earth scientists, spaceflight controllers, accident investigators, and air traffic safety managers. Rich was awarded a patent for the concepts underlying his development of an information management system for accident investigations which was used during the Shuttle Columbia accident investigation.
