Connection to the project is via Antarctica, where we have for some years been using microelectrode and fluorescence-based methods to examine the activity of microbial mats under thick ice covers. This has resulted in collaborations with Dale Andersen and Dawn Sumnerís groups, which inexorably led to Pavilion Lake. This year I am hoping to work ith Dale and Tyler Mackey to look at the light-photosynthesis relationships of stromatolites, and see how this relates to depth distributions and if it can be linked to the evolution of shape.
